A one-day workshop for Rails developers featuring best practices, live coding,
personalized feedback, and opportunities to meet new smart people
Knowing how to code a secure and reliable payment integration is a key skill for developers. If you know how to do it right you can use your knowledge to help people make money, so the potential ROI for them and you is massive. Of course if you get it wrong, you won’t be trusted for very long, so it’s critical to know how to build a fast, reliable payment integration.
Workshops are one of the fastest, most enjoyable ways to expand your programming skills. They are a great way to meet some new people, to have fun coding, and to learn something new which can help further your career.
Available for the promotional price of £99 to have you mastering how to receive payments online, and kicking off a growth in programming skills in 2014. You’ll get high level instruction and guidance, you’ll get to write the code live on the day, and you’ll get direct feedback from the instructor. Tasty lunch and coffee also included.
I will teach you…
“Explained some not so easy to understand concepts in a very clear and concise way. I had the opportunity of starting a small microservice of my own and I used some of your ideas, thank you again for the workshop!”
“What I like about Tim is he doesn't baffle you with all technical jargon. He's a fantastic developer and does some great stuff. I totally understood everything he was talking about when he was talking about the technical side. Normally I speak to developers and I often glaze over.”
“Working with TC over the past year has been an absolute pleasure. His technical proficiency is only matched by his attention to detail, and having a developer who not only understands the importance of design but also contributes purposefully to idea development has been extremely valuable.”
My name is Tim Craft. I’ve been programming for 15 years, I can write professional quality code in 4 programming languages, and I’ve used over 14 programming languages in total. I decided to run a workshop on taking payments with Stripe for a few reasons:
1. I really enjoy learning and sharing because it’s a great way to make more connections. I’ve met some great people through workshops, both as an attendee and as an instructor, and I want to help you do the same. My goal is for you to have a good time, learn something new, and make some new friends/connections whilst you are here.
2. Accepting credit card payments is important, but it’s something that’s scary for a lot of people. There’s money involved, and as soon as there’s money involved, everybody panics. I wasn’t born knowing how to write code to integrate with payment gateways, it’s something I’ve learned. I’ve since done this many times successfully, and been paid to do it. I want you to know you too can learn to confidently and professionally implement payments with your app.
3. I can teach you this skill in a single day. You can go from not knowing how to take payments to being able to take payments to a pretty advanced level. You’ll write code on the workshop that you can use the same day—if you already have your app setup in production with SSL you can even charge your own credit card and see how the process works from end-to-end by the end of the day.
4. These skills make you more valuable right away. If you’re freelancing, you can take this knowledge and make the price of the workshop back right away. If you’re employed, it shows your commitment to broadening your skillset and makes you more valuable to your employer. And if you’re going to do your own startup or webapp, being able to charge your customers is a critical step towards gaining some traction!
You will learn how to accept payments in your app with Stripe. This is a key skill for developers, with a multitude of uses. It’ll make you more valuable to your clients, your company, or your startup.
You will learn best practices, and how to be confident in the reliability and security of your setup. You’ll get the hands-on experience and hard-won lessons that you can’t get purely from the documentation or piecing together all the different blog posts.
You’ll very likely improve as a programmer in general by picking up a few new cool tricks and tactics. My own programming experience isn’t limited to Rails and Stripe, and you might find that you can learn just as much from the people sitting next to you.
It’ll be fun! You’ll meet some cool people and hopefully make some new friends. It’s difficult to find opportunities to hang out with other like-minded programmers without pressures of work and deadlines, and it’s always great to meet new people who have a growth mindset and are curious about learning new things.
What do I need to bring? Bring yourself, your laptop, a Rails app you want to integrate with Stripe, and a working Rails development environment (preferably Rails 3.2 or Rails 4, Ruby 1.9.3 or newer).
What if I don’t use Ruby or Rails? This is probably not for you! You don’t have to be a master Ruby/Rails programmer to learn these skills, but this workshop will be presented in the context of Ruby/Rails.
When is it? The workshop will be held on Saturday, 22nd February 2014. We’ll start promptly at 10am. Please arrive no later than 9:45am (come a bit earlier if you want to set up early). You can grab yourself a coffee and get settled in. We’ll have a break for lunch on-site, and we’ll wrap up by 5pm and head to a nearby pub for drinks.
Where is it? We’ll be in Shoreditch Village Hall, just a short walk from Old Street roundabout. It’s a fantastic event space with really great coffee and superfast wifi.
Will there be food & drink available? Yes. We’ve got excellent coffee and lunch provided on-site, included in the price of your ticket.
Will there be networking? There’s no pressure to network, this is a learning workshop more than a networking event, but you will have the opportunity to meet other attendees who are hopefully some smart and like-minded people to connect with.
Your question not answered here? Drop me an email and let me know.
The workshop comes with a full money-back guarantee. There’s no catch, and you get to choose if you want a refund or not, completely at your discretion with no restrictions.
I want you to take what you’ve learnt in the workshop and use it to create some win; for you, for your employer, or for that awesome community project you’re working on.
If what I’ve taught you doesn’t create outstanding value for you, then the course is entirely free and I’ll courteously refund the cost of your ticket in full. You get to keep the relationships with the other cool programmers who attended, and the great food and coffee we lined up on the day.
“£99 for a workshop, which quite frankly I think is bloomin' good. It’s very small, which is even better. Tim’s a great guy, very very knowledgeable.”
